Based on the Western empirical studies and the local pilot studies conducted by “Enriching Senior Year Places Students' Learning Experience through Curricular and Co-Curricular Activities in Hong Kong's Universities” (SYA Project), the study load of SYA students (known as transfer students in Western contexts) are significantly higher than that of the direct-entry students. Ineffective credit transfer due to the imperfect alignment of curriculum structure between sub-degree and degree programmes is regarded as the principal cause of students’ heavy workload that could affect their learning experience at the university.
In view of the specific needs of prospective and current SYA students on credit transfer, the Cross Institutional Credit-transfer Information System (CICIS) has been developed as one of the deliverables of SYA Project to exhibit the past credit transfer records from the sub-degree to degree programmes and the basic credit transfer guidelines of the SYA project participating universities (PolyU, CityU, HKBU and CUHK). This student-centered online support system with interactive multimedia courseware enhances the transparency of credit transfer to facilitate the smooth transition process of SYA students and to help the prospective SYA students (e.g. DSE students) to make a better arrangement on their academic planning.
